In 2003, Boat Bums International contributed to the Special Olympics, the American Cancer Society, Oxford's Little League Baseball Team and to local families in need. BBI has raised over $9,500 just for Special Olympics.
|
Originally, the race was a rowdy beer-guzzling event between local yachtsmen who had never owned a boat but who were rumored to have stepped onto a boat at some time. Today the race has become the anchoring event of BBI's fund raising along with food sales and the T-shirt sales, memorializing the race day. Now the event is a family oriented fun-filled experience for all who watch and participate. |

One of the highlights of the day is the Law Enforcement
competition. Originally a contest between the Oxford Police and the St.
Michaels Police departments, it is now open to all police and fire
affiliations that dare to put their oars into the water. This event is in
memory of Wally Jones who passed away in October of 1995. Wally was Oxford's
Police Chief for eighteen years and a founding member of Boat Bums
International. The Special Olympics was Wally's favorite charity.

The boats can have a wooden frame with only three board feet per contestant, but must use cardboard for the body of the boat (we can send you the rules). Local yachtsmen have volunteered to help with construction of the boats for those organizations that have the power and fund raising desire but not the time to construct a vessel. A limited number of boats are available to rent for a contribution of $500.00. Contact Skipper Marquess at 410-820-4104 or e-mail to wmarques@bluecrab.org. Every contestant entering the event will be required to wear a Life Preserver.
